Exchangeable Image File Format

Exchangeable image file format (Exif) is a standard that specifies the formats for images, sound, and ancillary tags used by digital cameras (including smartphones), scanners and other systems handling image and sound files recorded by digital cameras. The specification uses the following existing file formats with the addition of specific metadata tags: JPEG DCT (where DCT refers to the 1974 publication by N. Ahmed, T. Natarajan and K. R. Rao, Reference 1 in discrete cosine transform) for compressed image files, TIFF Rev. 6.0 (RGB or YCbCr) for uncompressed image files, and RIFF WAV for audio files (Linear PCM or ITU-T G.711 μ-Law PCM for uncompressed audio data, and IMA-ADPCM for compressed audio data). It is not supported in JPEG 2000, PNG, or GIF.

This standard consists of the Exif image file specification and the Exif audio file specification.

Famous quotes containing the words file and/or image:

While waiting to get married, several forms of employment were acceptable. Teaching kindergarten was for those girls who stayed in school four years. The rest were secretaries, typists, file clerks, or receptionists in insurance firms or banks, preferably those owned or run by the family, but respectable enough if the boss was an upstanding Christian member of the community.
    Barbara Howar (b. 1934)

Bring us the mirror, you ignorant thing, and be sure not to sully the image by the transmission of your reflection!
    Molière [Jean Baptiste Poquelin] (1622–1673)
