Wednesday (i/ˈwɛnzdeɪ/ or /ˈwɛnzdi/) is the fourth day of the week in the Gregorian calendar. According to international standard ISO 8601 adopted in most western countries it is the third day of the week. In countries that use the Sunday-first convention Wednesday is defined as the fourth day of the week. It is the fourth day of the week in the Judeo-Christian calendar as well, and was defined so in the ancient Mesopotamian and biblical calendars. This day is between Tuesday and Thursday. The name is derived from Old English Wōdnesdæg and Middle English Wednesdei, "day of Wodanaz", ultimately a calque of dies Mercurii "day of Mercury."

Wednesday is in the middle of the common Western 5-day workweek that starts on Monday and finishes on Friday.

Famous quotes containing the word wednesday:

    Moneys is your suit.
What should I say to you? Should I not say,
“Hath a dog money? Is it possible
A cur can lend three thousand ducats?” Or
Shall I bend low and in a bondman’s key,
With bated breath and whispering humbleness,
    Say this:
“Fair sir, you spat on me on Wednesday last,
You spurned me such a day, another time
You called me dog; and for these courtesies
I’ll lend you thus much moneys?”
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)
