Wayoata Elementary School is an elementary school that is part of the River East Transcona School Division in Winnipeg, Manitoba. It and its twin school, École Regent Park School, were officially opened in the same week in February 1960, although some classes had been in session in both schools since December 1959.
In the beginning, naming the school after Wayoata Street met with some opposition, since the official opening occurred on the day that The Prince Andrew was born. However, many liked the original Indian name, which roughly translated means "place of beauty and abundance". The school opened with eight rooms from grades 1 to 6. There was also a kindergarten, music room and nurse’s room. Since it was constructed, numerous additions have been made to the building to accommodate new pupils resulting from homebuilding in the area.
Terry Fox attended grades 2 and 3 at Wayoata, and appears in a class picture dated 1965-66. A photograph of Fox, taken near the end of his grueling run near Thunder Bay, Ontario, is displayed prominently in the entrance hall.
Famous quotes containing the words elementary and/or school:
“If men as individuals surrender to the call of their elementary instincts, avoiding pain and seeking satisfaction only for their own selves, the result for them all taken together must be a state of insecurity, of fear, and of promiscuous misery.”
—Albert Einstein (18791955)
“And Guidobaldo, when he made
That grammar school of courtesies
Where wit and beauty learned their trade
Upon Urbinos windy hill,
Had sent no runners to and fro
That he might learn the shepherds will.”
—William Butler Yeats (18651939)
