St Swithun's School, Winchester - Culture

Culture

Current headmistress Ms J Gandee describes the school as 'unashamedly but appropriately academic' and a place where girls are expected to work hard in class and at homework but then invited to put books away and have a go at something completely different with the understanding that the best learning is often achieved through initial failure but then perseverance to succeed. The principle of the school is to work hard in the day,and then be invited to put down the books and do something fun.

Famous quotes containing the word culture:

Our culture has become something that is completely and utterly in love with its parent. It’s become a notion of boredom that is bought and sold, where nothing will happen except that people will become more and more terrified of tomorrow, because the new continues to look old, and the old will always look cute.
    Malcolm McLaren (b. 1946)

Ours is a culture based on excess, on overproduction; the result is a steady loss of sharpness in our sensory experience. All the conditions of modern life—its material plenitude, its sheer crowdedness—conjoin to dull our sensory faculties.
    Susan Sontag (b. 1933)

When women finally get liberated, they’ll do the same that men do—dog eat dog— that’s what our culture is.... Not cooperation but assassination. Women will cooperate until they attain certain goals. Then one will begin to destroy the other.
    Alice Neel (1900–1984)
