Manganese(II) Oxide - Preparation and Occurrence

Preparation and Occurrence

MnO can be prepared by the reduction of any higher oxide with hydrogen e.g.:

MnO2 + H2 → MnO + H2O

Commercially it is prepared by reduction of MnO2 with hydrogen, carbon monoxide or methane:

MnO2 + CO → MnO + CO2

MnO can also be prepared by heating MnCO3:

MnCO3 → MnO + CO2

This calcining process is conducted anaerobically to prevent formation of Mn2O3. MnO occurs in nature as the rare mineral manganosite.

Famous quotes containing the words preparation and, preparation and/or occurrence:

It’s sad but true that if you focus your attention on housework and meal preparation and diapers, raising children does start to look like drudgery pretty quickly. On the other hand, if you see yourself as nothing less than your child’s nurturer, role model, teacher, spiritual guide, and mentor, your days take on a very different cast.
    Joyce Maynard (20th century)

Living each day as a preparation for the next is an exciting way to live. Looking forward to something is much more fun than looking back at something—and much more constructive. If we can prepare ourselves so that we never have to think, “Oh, if I had only known, if I had only been ready,” our lives can really be the great adventure we so passionately want them to be.
    Hortense Odlum (1892–?)

One is absolutely sickened, not by the crimes that the wicked have committed, but by the punishments that the good have inflicted; and a community is infinitely more brutalised by the habitual employment of punishment than it is by the occasional occurrence of crime.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)
