- Gateshead ( United Kingdom): The coaster collided with Miranda ( Norway) in the North Sea 8 nautical miles (15 km) off Seaham, County Durham and sank with the loss of eight of her thirteen crew.
- Kedumba ( United Kingdom): The ferry foundered off Montague Island, New South Wales, Australia.
- Seine ( France): The cargo ship sprang a leak in the Bay of Biscay 70 nautical miles (130 km) off the La Coubre Lighthouse, Charente-Maritime and was abandoned. The crew were rescued by a trawler. Seine was taken in tow by Dupleix ( Marine Nationale). She foundered 40 nautical miles (74 km) south west of La Pallice, Charente-Maritime.
