Empress Lü Zhi - Evaluation

Evaluation

Lü Zhi has been criticised by historians for being a power-hungry woman. Despite her reputation for ruthlessness and cruelty, she appeared to be genuinely devoted to her husband and maintaining stability of the empire—so much so that long after Emperor Gaozu's death, she, then firmly in control, continued to carry out his instructions on the succession of ministers. Despite her brutality, she was known to be a competent administrator, and she, other than the instances of nepotism, generally promoted capable officials. During her regency, therefore, the people of the empire enjoyed a measure of rest from the turmoils of the fall of the Qin Dynasty and the wars of the Chu–Han Contention. However, due to her trade embargo against Nanyue, Nanyue made repeated attacks against the Changsha principality (in present-day Hunan) and Nan Commandery (in present-day Hubei).

Famous quotes containing the word evaluation:

Good critical writing is measured by the perception and evaluation of the subject; bad critical writing by the necessity of maintaining the professional standing of the critic.
    Raymond Chandler (1888–1959)

Evaluation is creation: hear it, you creators! Evaluating is itself the most valuable treasure of all that we value. It is only through evaluation that value exists: and without evaluation the nut of existence would be hollow. Hear it, you creators!
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
