Early Life and Background

Nargis' father was Uttamchand Mohanchand, a wealthy Punjabi Brahmin (Mohyal) from Rawalpindi. Her mother was Jaddanbai, a Punjabi Muslim. Her family had migrated to Allahabad from Punjab. She was a Hindustani classical music singer and courtesan in Allahadad. She introduced her into the movie culture unfolding in India at the time. Her only brother, Anwar Hussain, also became a film actor. Anwar Hussain was born to Jaddanbai and a different husband, and was raised in Muslim tradition like his mother. She converted to Hinduism upon marriage with Sunil Dutt.
