Moynihan was born in Salford and is the eldest of three sisters (Lara and Hayley Moynihan). She has two sons, Dylan Scott, born in 2003, and Jacob, born in September 2008. She is married to Andy Smalley.
Moynihan is best friends with Linzey Cocker partner of Waterloo Road and Hollyoaks actor Oliver Lee whom she met when the pair starred in Drop Dead Gorgeous.
