Subantarctic Islands
There are also churches on two of the islands situated South of the Antarctic Convergence and North of 60° S latitude (and thus not part of the Antarctic Treaty System).
- Notre-Dame des Vents at Port-aux-Français on the main island of Kerguelen.
- Norwegian Lutheran Church (Grytviken, South Georgia), a Lutheran chapel in Grytviken, South Georgia (since 1913). After years of abandonment and weathering the harsh elements of the region (roof damaged in 1994), the Grytviken church has been renovated by the keepers of South Georgia Museum and volunteers in 1996 - 1998 and now serves for occasional church services and marriage ceremonies.

Famous quotes containing the word islands:
“The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color-linethe relation of the darker to the lighter races of men in Asia and Africa, in America and the islands of the sea. It was a phase of this problem that caused the Civil War.”
—W.E.B. (William Edward Burghardt)
