Neutral buoyancy is a condition in which a physical body's density is equal to the density of the fluid in which it is immersed. This offsets the force of gravity that would otherwise cause the object to sink. An object that has neutral buoyancy will neither sink nor rise.
In scuba diving, the ability to maintain neutral buoyancy through controlled breathing is an important skill.
... prevention ballast weight loss Possible inability to establish neutral buoyancy leading to uncontrolled ascent Loss of diving weights ... Carry the amount of weight appropriate for regaining neutral buoyancy on a releasable system, and the rest securely attached to the harness ... Buoyancy loss - potential inability to establish neutral or positive buoyancy, and difficulty or inability to ascend ...
... Weightlessness can also be simulated by creating the condition of neutral buoyancy, in which human subjects and equipment are placed in a water environment and weighted or buoyed until they hover in place ... NASA uses neutral buoyancy to prepare for extra-vehicular activity (EVA) at its Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory ... Neutral buoyancy is also used for EVA research at the University of Maryland's Space Systems Laboratory, which operates the only neutral buoyancy tank at a college or university ...

The principle of neutral buoyancy is used to simulate the weightless environment of space ... One downside of using neutral buoyancy to simulate microgravity is the significant amount of drag presented by water ...
... had been demonstrated, in January 1966, workers repurposed a larger explosive forming tank for neutral buoyancy testing ... pressure valve which "made it possible to maintain neutral buoyancy at any depth." Divers first tried the Mark IV in the tank in July 1966, and Alan Bean spent two hours "executing typical ... Famous quotes containing the words buoyancy and/or neutral:
The Topic over intellectual deeps
In buoyancy afloat. They see no ghost.
With sparkling surface-eyes we ply the ball:
It is in truth a most contagious game:
Hiding the Skeleton, shall be its name.”
—George Meredith (18281909)
“I feel the carousel starting slowly
And going faster and faster: desk, papers, books,
Photographs of friends, the window and the trees
Merging in one neutral band that surrounds
Me on all sides, everywhere I look.”
—John Ashbery (b. 1927)
