Culture and Sport
The Mount Egerton Recreation Reserve is the hub of sporting activity in the town, although the town's feeble population makes organised sports a challenge. Australian rules football is popular, however the local club is dormant and the oval has instead been used for other sports mostly by teams from nearby towns. Cricket is also popular. A local cricket association existed until 1951 after which the local team joined the Ballarat Cricket Association. The club has since disbanded and the Gordon Cricket Club instead makes use of its venue. Tennis was also popular, however the local club dissolved. Soccer has a presence in the town with a local team existed for a short time before disbanding. Instead The Ballan United Soccer Club and the Moorabool Panthers Soccer Club use the reserve as a venue.

Famous quotes containing the words culture and, culture and/or sport:
“Culture and possessionsthere is the bourgeoisie for you.”
—Thomas Mann (18751955)
“Whatever offices of life are performed by women of culture and refinement are thenceforth elevated; they cease to be mere servile toils, and become expressions of the ideas of superior beings.”
—Harriet Beecher Stowe (18111896)
“Sweet Auburn, loveliest village of the plain,
Where health and plenty cheered the labouring swain,
Where smiling spring its earliest visit paid,
And parting summers lingering blooms delayed,
Dear lovely bowers of innocence and ease,
Seats of my youth, when every sport could please,
How often have I loitered oer the green,
Where humble happiness endeared each scene.”
—Oliver Goldsmith (1730?1774)
