Mercy Lewis was born in Falmouth, Maine. She was orphaned at a young age from Indian attacks, which prompted her to become a servant. She was first a servant for Reverend George Burroughs and then later was a servant in Thomas Putnam’s household in 1675. She is also one of the featured characters in Arthur Miller's play and later film The Crucible. She played a crucial role during the accusations of the Salem Witch Trials in 1692.
