List Of Characters In The Metal Gear Series
The Metal Gear franchise features a large number of fictional characters created by Hideo Kojima and designed by Yoji Shinkawa. Its setting features several soldiers with supernatural powers provided by the new advancements of science.
The series follows mercenary Solid Snake who is given the mission of finding a weapon known as Metal Gear by the FOXHOUND special operations unit. Across the series, Snake is assisted by several other characters in investigating areas and defeating his enemies. During his first missions, Snake is opposed by his own mentor Big Boss who is revealed as the one behind Metal Gears. Following games reveal the appearances of Snake's brothers, Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake, who were cloned from Big Boss and serve respectively as the main antagonists of both Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. During Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Raiden learns the existence of a group known as The Patriots who are controlling the United States with their agent Revolver Ocelot being one of the main antagonists. Additionally, there are several games that follow Big Boss' past where he establishes FOXHOUND and the Patriots, as well as several spin-off titles.
While Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake had their characters designs parodying Hollywood actors, the inclusion of Yoji Shinkawa established a series of consistent designs based on Shinkawa's ideas of what would appeal to gamers. Additionally, several of the characters he designs follow Hideo Kojima and the other staff's ideas. Critical reception of the game's cast has been positive as publications praised their personalities and roles within the series.
