State and Federal Representation

The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) operates the Laredo Parole Office in Laredo.

There is an office too on Arkansas Avenue of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. At the previous location of the commission on Casa Blanca Road, a tragedy occurred on December 5, 2011, when a 38-year-old woman, Rachelle Grimmer, mortally wounded her two children and then committed suicide after she was initially denied food stamp, now Lone Star Card, benefits. Grimmer took two social workers hostage before a supervisor, Robert Reyes, offered himself in place of the employees. The Grimmer tragedy was voted the No. 1 news story in Laredo for 2011 by the Laredo Morning Times.

The U.S. District Court is based downtown in a relatively new building next to the Webb County Courthouse. The United States Postal Service operates its main Post Office at 2700 East Saunders Street south of Laredo International Airport. Postal branches are located downtown and at 2395 East Del Mar Boulevard.

Famous quotes containing the words state and/or federal:

Once the state has been founded, there can no longer be any heroes. They come on the scene only in uncivilized conditions.
    Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831)

[M]y conception of liberty does not permit an individual citizen or a group of citizens to commit acts of depredation against nature in such a way as to harm their neighbors and especially to harm the future generations of Americans. If many years ago we had had the necessary knowledge, and especially the necessary willingness on the part of the Federal Government, we would have saved a sum, a sum of money which has cost the taxpayers of America two billion dollars.
    Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)
