Interscope Communications

Interscope Communications (also known as Interscope Pictures) was a motion picture production company founded in 1982 by Ted Field. Its divisions included Interscope Records (which was founded in 1990 as a joint venture with Atlantic Records).

In 1992, PolyGram bought a controlling interest in Interscope's film division. A couple years earlier, Interscope started a distribution deal with The Walt Disney Company's film divisions (Walt Disney Pictures, Touchstone Pictures, and Hollywood Pictures). PolyGram handled international distribution, while Disney handled U.S. distribution. The Disney partnership ended in 1997.

In 1999, after PolyGram was bought by Universal, Interscope's film unit was retained as a subsidiary of Universal Studios until it was shut down in 2003. Interscope Records, however, still exists as part of Universal Music Group (whose predecessor MCA purchased Atlantic's stake in the label in 1995).
