December 20, 2001, Incident

On December 20, 2001, at the height of the December 2001 riots in Argentina, HSBC security personnel opened fire from inside the HSBC Buenos Aires headquarters building against civilians that had been marching to Plaza de Mayo to demonstrate against President Fernando de la RĂșa who resigned a day later. Gustavo Ariel Benedetto was murdered by a 9 mm gunshot to his head in this episode. HSBC's security video recordings demonstrated later that security personnel actually opened fire while not being at any substantial risk since marchers were not able to enter the building. Additionally, carrying lethal weapons in public places by private security personnel is forbidden by law in Buenos Aires.

Famous quotes containing the words december and/or incident:

    Work—work—work,
    In the dull December light,
    And work—work—work,
When the weather is warm and bright—
    While underneath the eaves
    The brooding swallows cling
As if to show me their sunny backs
And twit me with the spring.
    Thomas Hood (1799–1845)

“It is of the highest importance in the art of detection to be able to recognise out of a number of facts which are incidental and which are vital.... I would call your attention to the curious incident of the dog in the night-time.”
“The dog did nothing in the night-time.”
    “That was the curious incident.”
    Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930)
