Gerald B. Clarke was the principal secretary to the Rhodesian Cabinet (under Prime Minister Ian Smith) throughout the existence of the Rhodesian Front Government (1964–1979). A close confidant of Prime Minister Smith, Clarke attended virtually every conference and Heads-of-Governments meetings that Smith attended throughout his tenure.
Clarke organized and ran the sub-committee that drew up the Unilateral Declaration of Independence, which Smith and his cabinet signed on November 11, 1965. Thus he is regarded as the architect of the UDI.
Famous quotes containing the words gerald b and/or clarke:
“The difference between a photograph and even the most realistic paintingsay, one of Courbets landscapesis that in the latter there has been selection, emphasis and some discreet distortion. The painters deep instinctive feeling for mass and force has rearranged everything.”
—Gerald Branan (18941987)
“He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook, when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,”
—Clement Clarke Moore (17791863)
