Figure Skating National Championships

Figure Skating National Championships

Many countries hold national championships for figure skating. These events are conducted to determine the country's national champion and are most often held in December or January. National associations generally use these events as one of the criteria to select the teams for the European, Four Continents, World Junior, and World Championships, however, their weight varies from country to country. Some countries consider only the results of their national championships, while other countries use those results in conjunction with other events and criteria.

Famous quotes containing the words figure, skating and/or national:

A lonely man is a lonesome thing, a stone, a bone, a stick, a receptacle for Gilbey’s gin, a stooped figure sitting at the edge of a hotel bed, heaving copious sighs like the autumn wind.
    John Cheever (1912–1982)

Good writing is a kind of skating which carries off the performer where he would not go, and is only right admirable when to all its beauty and speed a subserviency to the will, like that of walking, is added.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

Thinking is the most unhealthy thing in the world, and people die of it just as they die of any other disease. Fortunately, in England at any rate, thought is not catching. Our splendid physique as a people is entirely due to our national stupidity.
    Oscar Wilde (1854–1900)
