Type of Calls
Most of the calls Dennis Volunteer Fire Company receives are that of motor vehicle accidents (MVAs), as one of New Jersey's most frequently traveled roads, Route 47, runs directly through the district. Being the main route of vacationers heading to the shore from mid-May to late-September, the area is prone to several accidents per-week.
MVAs aren't the only calls that the company handles, however. Structure fires, brush fires, activated fire alarms, landing zone assignments, and even an occasion water rescue are all incidents handled by DVFC each year. In recent years, the department has also responded to three airplane crashes - June 20, 2008 (Broad St., Belleplain); June 25, 2009 (Frederickstadt Ave., Woodbine) and November 14, 2009 (Petersburg Rd., Dennisville). In addition to their own calls, DVFC often provides mutual aid assistance to fire companies in nearby communities, such as Woodbine, Ocean View, Belleplain, and Goshen.
In 2012, DVFC was located at the center of the landfall point of Hurricane Sandy and responded to 5 calls for action in a period of three hours following the landfall, including downed trees on Academy Road and Route 47, arcing wires on Hagan Road, a tree onto a house on Lake View Drive, and a mutual aid request by Maurice River Township, Cumberland County for Marine 18 on Moore's Beach Road. The department's EMTs also provided backup emergency medical coverage for the township with an ambulance stationed at the firehouse by Belleplain Emergency Corps. In the days following the hurricane, Tender 1843 spent approximately 16 hours at Ship Bottom Volunteer Fire Company on Long Beach Island in Ocean County to assist in recovery efforts.
