David Freeman-Mitford, 2nd Baron Redesdale - Biography - Marriage and Children

Marriage and Children

In February 1904 he married Sydney Bowles, whom he had first met ten years previously, when he was 16 and she was 14. She was the daughter of Thomas Gibson Bowles, a journalist and Conservative MP, who in 1863 had founded the magazine Vanity Fair, and some years later the women's magazine The Lady.

The couple had one son and six daughters, who all used the surname Mitford rather than Freeman-Mitford; the girls were known collectively as the Mitford sisters:

  • Nancy Mitford (Mrs Peter Rodd) (1904–73)
  • Pamela Mitford (Mrs Derek Jackson) (1907–94)
  • Major Thomas Mitford (1909–45) (killed in action)
  • Diana Mitford (Mrs Bryan Guinness, then Lady Mosley) (1910–2003)
  • Unity Vallkyrie Mitford (1914–48)
  • Jessica Mitford (Mrs Esmond Romilly, then Mrs Robert Treuhaft) (1917–96)
  • Deborah Mitford (now the Dowager Duchess of Devonshire) (born 1920)

Famous quotes containing the words marriage and/or children:

A woman asking “Am I good? Am I satisfied?” is extremely selfish. The less women fuss about themselves, the less they talk to other women, the more they try to please their husbands, the happier the marriage is going to be.
    Barbara Cartland (b. 1901)

The place is very well & quiet & the children only scream in a low voice.
    George Gordon Noel Byron (1788–1824)
