Canon Island (Inis na CanĂ¡nach in Irish) is an island situated in the River Shannon, about 2.5 km east of the village of Kildysart, County Clare in Ireland.
The island is home to the ruins of Canon Island Abbey, an Augustinian monastery built in the late 12th century.
Famous quotes containing the words canon and/or island:
“Art is not the application of a canon of beauty but what the instinct and the brain can conceive beyond any canon. When we love a woman we dont start measuring her limbs.”
—Pablo Picasso (18811973)
“I suggested to them also the great desirability of a general knowledge on the Island of the English language. They are under an English speaking government and are a part of the territory of an English speaking nation.... While I appreciated the desirability of maintaining their grasp on the Spanish language, the beauty of that language and the richness of its literature, that as a practical matter for them it was quite necessary to have a good comprehension of English.”
—Calvin Coolidge (18721933)
