Black Swan State Theatre Company - The HotBed Ensemble and Emerging Artists Program

The HotBed Ensemble and Emerging Artists Program

The HotBed Ensemble was Black Swan’s professional development program for emerging Western Australian artists from 2006 to . The HotBed aimed to nurture, stimulate and showcase a selection of Perth's most imaginative and talented theatre-makers.

The program included exclusive skills development and workshop opportunities with international visiting artists, close contact with Black Swan staff, and the opportunity to create original, edgy and contemporary work.

The HotBed Ensemble enjoyed critical and popular success since its inception in 2006. It produced classic texts, contemporary work and new plays, including 'Falling Petals' (2006), 'Woyzeck' (2006), 'Laramie Project' (2007, Perth season and regional tour), the award winning 'Caucasian Chalk Circle' (2008), 'Portraits of Modern Evil' (2008), 'The Dark Room' (2009), 'pool ' (2009), 'The Shape of Things' (2010), 'Yellow Moon: the Balled of Leila and Lee' (2010).

In addition to skills development and networking opportunities more than a third of HotBed artists have gone on to work in Black Swan's mainstage program, which is one of the core objectives for the ensemble.

The HotBed Ensemble has been redeveloped into Black Swan's Emerging Artists program, to operate across studio and mainstage productions, enabling the Company to work with a growing number of emerging artists and offering them a broader learning experience. Associate Artists include emerging designers, directors, writers and actors who work closely with each other and more experienced artists throughout the year, giving them an opportunity to experiment and develop their skills.

Famous quotes containing the words emerging, artists and/or program:

Your children are not here to fill the void left by marital dissatisfaction and disengagement. They are not to be utilized as a substitute for adult-adult intimacy. They are not in this world in order to satisfy a wife’s or a husband’s need for love, closeness or a sense of worth. A child’s task is to fully develop his/her emerging self. When we place our children in the position of satisfying our needs, we rob them of their childhood.
    Aaron Hess (20th century)

The reward of art is not fame or success but intoxication: that is why so many bad artists are unable to give it up.
    Cyril Connolly (1903–1974)

The trenchant editorials plus the keen rivalry natural to extremely partisan papers made it necessary for the editors to be expert pugilists and duelists as well as journalists. An editor made no assertion that he could not defend with fists or firearms.
