Arago Spot With Matter Waves
Recently, the Arago spot experiment has been demonstrated with a supersonic expansion beam of deuterium molecules, so-called neutral matter waves. Material particles behave like waves as is known from quantum mechanics. The wave-nature of particles actually dates back to de Broglie's hypothesis as well as Davisson and Germer's experiments. An Arago spot of electrons, which also constitute matter waves, can be observed in transmission electron microscopes when examining circular structures of a certain size. The observation of an Arago spot with large molecules, and thus proving their wave-nature is a topic of current research.

Famous quotes containing the words spot, matter and/or waves:
“The very best place to be in all the world is St. Marys parish, Jamaica. And the best spot in St. Marys is Port Maria, though all of St. Marys is fine. Old Maker put himself to a lot of trouble to make that part of the island of Jamaica, for everything there is perfect.”
—Zora Neale Hurston (18911960)
“I have found little that is good about human beings on the whole. In my experience most of them are trash, no matter whether they publicly subscribe to this or that ethical doctrine or to none at all. That is something that you cannot say aloud, or perhaps even think.”
—Sigmund Freud (18561939)
“During our twenties...we act toward the new adulthood the way sociologists tell us new waves of immigrants acted on becoming Americans: we adopt the host cultures values in an exaggerated and rigid fashion until we can rethink them and make them our own. Our idea of what adults are and what were supposed to be is composed of outdated childhood concepts brought forward.”
—Roger Gould (20th century)
