Controversy
Abdullah Al-Thani is deeply religious member of the royal family. He was Qatar’s Minister of Religious Affairs in 1996. During that time he sheltered Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and helped him to evade capture by the U.S. FBI in 1996 when the FBI closed in on him in connection with the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the Bojinka Plot. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed later became more closely associated with the al-Qaeda organization and went on to mastermind the September 11, 2001 attacks.
