The All-Purpose Lightweight Individual Carrying Equipment, or ALICE system, was adopted as United States Army Standard A on 17 January 1973 to replace the M-1956 Load-Carrying Equipment and M-1967 Modernized Load-Carrying Equipment . ALICE gear is still in some limited use in the US Army in National guard and training units. While the USMC currently uses ALICE gear in training only, it is still in use by Navy and Air Force ground units.

Famous quotes containing the words all-purpose, individual, carrying and/or equipment:
“Knowing how beleaguered working mothers truly areknowing because I am one of themI am still amazed at how one need only say I work to be forgiven all expectation, to be assigned almost a handicapped status that no decent human being would burden further with demands. —Melinda M. Marshall (20th century)
“The Lord wrote it all down on the little slate
Of the baby tortoise.
Outward and visible indication of the plan within,
The complex, manifold involvedness of an individual creature”
—D.H. (David Herbert)
“Thought dissolves the material universe by carrying the mind up into a sphere where all is plastic.”
—Ralph Waldo Emerson (18031882)
“At the heart of the educational process lies the child. No advances in policy, no acquisition of new equipment have their desired effect unless they are in harmony with the child, unless they are fundamentally acceptable to him.”
—Central Advisory Council for Education. Children and Their Primary Schools (Plowden Report)
