Winemaking Cooperative - Southern Europe

Southern Europe

In southern Europe, cooperatives are responsible for a large part of the wine production. Figures of around 60 per cent have been quoted for Italy’s cantina sociale and cooperatives in Spain and Portugal. However, in difference from France and Germany, a high proportion of the cooperatives’ wine are not bottled by themselves, but sold in bulk for bottling by commercial operators or, especially in the case of Spain, for distillation.

Famous quotes containing the words southern and/or europe:

I prefer to make no new declarations [on southern policy beyond what was in the Letter of Acceptance]. But you may say, if you deem it advisable, that you know that I will stand by the friendly and encouraging words of that Letter, and by all that they imply. You cannot express that too strongly.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)

Europe has lived on its contradictions, flourished on its differences, and, constantly transcending itself thereby, has created a civilization on which the whole world depends even when rejecting it. This is why I do not believe in a Europe unified under the weight of an ideology or of a technocracy that overlooked these differences.
    Albert Camus (1913–1960)
