What is finger?

Finger

A finger is a limb of the human body and a type of digit, an organ of manipulation and sensation found in the hands of humans and other primates. Normally humans have five digits, the bones of whom are termed phalanges, on each hand (exceptions are polydactyly, oligodactyly and digit loss). The first digit is the thumb, followed by index finger, middle finger, ring finger, and little finger or pinky. Some other languages use the same generic term for all five digits of a hand.

Famous quotes containing the word finger:

    the trouble lies in pointing
At any stars. For one’s own finger aims
Always elsewhere: the man beside one seems
Never to get the point. “No! The bright star
    Just above my fingertip.”
    John Hollander (b. 1929)

For let our finger ache, and it endues
Our other healthful members even to a sense
    Of pain.
    William Shakespeare (1564–1616)

They give us a pair of cloth shorts twice a year for all our clothing. When we work in the sugar mills and catch our finger in the millstone, they cut off our hand; when we try to run away, they cut off our leg: both things have happened to me. It is at this price that you eat sugar in Europe.
    Voltaire [François Marie Arouet] (1694–1778)
