What is farmer?

Farmer

A farmer (also called an agriculturer) is a person engaged in agriculture, who raises living organisms for food or raw materials, generally including livestock husbandry and growing crops, such as produce and grain. A farmer might own the farmed land or might work as a labourer on land owned by others, but in advanced economies, a farmer is usually a farm owner, while employees of the farm are farm workers, farmhands, etc.

Famous quotes containing the word farmer:

The measure discriminates definitely against products which make up what has been universally considered a program of safe farming. The bill upholds as ideals of American farming the men who grow cotton, corn, rice, swine, tobacco, or wheat and nothing else. These are to be given special favors at the expense of the farmer who has toiled for years to build up a constructive farming enterprise to include a variety of crops and livestock.
    Calvin Coolidge (1872–1933)

I think that the farmer displaces the Indian even because he redeems the meadow, and so makes himself stronger and in some respects more natural.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

A good farmer is nothing more nor less than a handy man with a sense of humus.
    —E.B. (Elwyn Brooks)
