Memorial High School (Eau Claire, Wisconsin) - Homecoming Election Scandal

Homecoming Election Scandal

In the fall of 1992, the student elected as Homecoming Queen, who was five months pregnant at the time, was secretly denied the title by school officials, and the ballots were burned. An investigation by the superintendent found that the runner-up, who had been named the winner after the votes were counted, had actually lost by over 30 votes. The principal at the time resigned after the allegations were revealed, and other administrators were reprimanded. The incident was one of the inspirations for the novel and movie Election.

Famous quotes containing the words election and/or scandal:

The election makes me think of a story of a man who was dying. He had only two minutes to live, so he sent for a clergyman and asked him, “Where is the best place to go to?” He was undecided about it. So the minister told him that each place had its advantages—heaven for climate, and hell for society.
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)

Certain it is that scandal is good brisk talk, whereas praise of one’s neighbour is by no means lively hearing. An acquaintance grilled, scored, devilled, and served with mustard and cayenne pepper excites the appetite; whereas a slice of cold friend with currant jelly is but a sickly, unrelishing meat.
    William Makepeace Thackeray (1811–1863)
