Lawrence Arts Center

The Lawrence Arts Center was established in Lawrence, Kansas in May 1974 to support the visual and performing arts. The founder and first Executive Director was Ann Evans, who retired at the end of 2007. In 2002, the Center opened a new facility that included studios, gallery space, a performance space, a gallery shop and space for an arts-based preschool. Currently over 95,000 people participate in the education, performance and outreach programs each year.

On November 17, 2008, David L. Leamon assumed the role of Executive Director. Mr. Leamon resigned as Executive Director effective July 31, 2009, and the current Executive Director, Susan Tate, a former Humanities and English teacher at Lawrence High School, began in the position on December 1, 2009.

Famous quotes containing the words lawrence, arts and/or center:

    There was ease in Casey’s manner as he stepped into his place,
    There was pride in Casey’s bearing and a smile on Casey’s face;
    —Ernest Lawrence Thayer (1863–1940)

    Women hock their jewels and their husbands’ insurance policies to acquire an unaccustomed shade in hair or crêpe de chine. Why then is it that when anyone commits anything novel in the arts he should be always greeted by this same peevish howl of pain and surprise? One is led to suspect that the interest people show in these much talked of commodities, painting, music, and writing, cannot be very deep or very genuine when they so wince under an unexpected impact.
    John Dos Passos (1896–1970)

    It is written in the Book of Usable Minutes
    That all things have their center in their dying....
    John Ashbery (b. 1927)
