Kalathur Kannamma

Kalathur Kannamma (English: Kannamma of Kalathur) is a 1959/1960 Indian Tamil romantic drama film produced by A. V. Meiyappan and directed by A. Bhimsingh. The film stars Gemini Ganesan and Savitri in the lead, while Kamal Hassan made his debut in this film as a child artist. The story is about how the daughter of a poor peasant bewitches the son of a wealthy landlord, who eventually wins her hand despite her initial reluctance. But when the young man's father finds out about their secret marriage, he is angered and forces the couple to sever the relationship, this is unknown to his son. The film became an instant success at the box office, and was the winner of several awards such as the Certificate of Merit by the Government of India, and the President's Gold Medal award. Kalathur Kannamma was also dubbed in Telugu as Mavoori Ammayi. Bhimsingh later remade the film in Hindi as Main Chup Rahungi, which starred Sunil Dutt and Meena Kumari in the lead roles.
