Banzhaf was born July 2, 1940 in New York City. He graduated at the age of 15 (three years earlier than usual) from Manhattan's Stuyvesant High School, one of the three academically elite high-schools of the NYC Public School System. Famous quotes containing the words life and/or education:

the sheets and towels of a life we were going to share,
The milk-stiff bibs, the shroud, each rag to be ever
Trampled or soiled, bled on or groped for blindly,
Came swooning out of an enormous willow hamper
    Onto moon-marbly boards.
    James Merrill (b. 1926)

Because of these convictions, I made a personal decision in the 1964 Presidential campaign to make education a fundamental issue and to put it high on the nation’s agenda. I proposed to act on my belief that regardless of a family’s financial condition, education should be available to every child in the United States—as much education as he could absorb.
    Lyndon Baines Johnson (1908–1973)
