“If Jesus, or his likeness, should now visit the earth, what church of the many which now go by his name would he enter? Or, if tempted by curiosity, he should incline to look into all, which do you think would not shut the door in his face?... It seems to me ... that as one who loved peace, taught industry, equality, union, and love, one towards another, Jesus were he alive at this day, would recommend you to come out of your churches of faith, and to gather into schools of knowledge.”
—Frances Wright (17951852)
“Isnt this your life? That ancient kiss
still burning out your eyes? Isnt this defeat
so accurate, the church bell simply seems
a pure announcement: ring and no one comes?”
—Richard Hugo (19231982)
“Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming.”
—Bible: New Testament, Matthew 24:42.
“DArrast: Just tell me, has your good Jesus always answered your call?
The Rooster: Always, no, Captain.
DArrast: Well, then?
The Rooster burst out in a fresh and childlike laugh: Well, he is free, isnt he?”
—Albert Camus (19131960)
“Rejoice ye pure in heart,
Rejoice, give thanks, and sing;
Your orient banners wave on high,
The cross of Christ your King.”
—Edward Plumptre (18211891)
