Big Brother 5 Croatia began on Friday 5 September 2008. The major twist of this edition is that the House is not actually in Croatia, but it is located in the country of Thailand. This is not the first time a house has been located outside of the country of the broadcaster. The first time it happened was in 2003 when the Big Brother VIP1 Denmark edition took place in the Big Brother Norway house. Also in 2003, the Gran Hermano Ecuador edition was located in the Argentinian house and the Pacific edition was located in the Columbian House. This Croatian edition is however the first edition to use a house in another country as part of a twist as all the other instances were done due to necessity.
