The American Civil War bibliography comprises books that deal in large part with the American Civil War. This list emphasizes recent titles, especially those that are generally available through academic libraries, inter-library loan or online. There are over 60,000 books on the War, with more appearing each month. There is no complete bibliography to the war; the largest guide to useful books is over 40 years old and lists over 6000 titles selected by leading scholars. Many specialized topics such as Abraham Lincoln, women, and medicine have their own lengthy bibliographies. The books on major campaigns typically contain their own specialized guides to the sources and literature. The most comprehensive guide to the historiography annotates over a thousand titles.

Famous quotes containing the words american, civil and/or war:
“No slogan of democracy; no battle cry of freedom is more striving then the American parents simple statement which all of you have heard many times: I want my child to go to college.”
—Lyndon Baines Johnson (19081973)
“Both of us felt more anxiety about the Southabout the colored people especiallythan about anything else sinister in the result. My hope of a sound currency will somehow be realized; civil service reform will be delayed; but the great injury is in the South. There the Amendments will be nullified, disorder will continue, prosperity to both whites and colored people will be pushed off for years.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
“Another danger is imminent: A contested result. And we have no such means for its decision as ought to be provided by law. This must be attended to hereafter.... If a contest comes now it may lead to a conflict of arms. I can only try to do my duty to my countrymen in that case. I shall let no personal ambition turn me from the path of duty. Bloodshed and civil war must be averted if possible. If forced to fight, I have no fears from lack of courage or firmness.”
—Rutherford Birchard Hayes (18221893)
