In 1973, the National Endowment for the Humanities awarded him a National Journalism Fellowship. The Radio and Television News Directors of America awarded Gibson with the Paul White Award in 2006, and in 2008 Quinnipiac University awarded him the Fred Friendly First Amendment Award.
