During his first missions, Snake is opposed by his own mentor Big Boss who is revealed as the one behind Metal Gears. Following games reveal the appearances of Snake's brothers, Liquid Snake and Solidus Snake, who were cloned from Big Boss and serve respectively as the main antagonists of both Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty. During Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Raiden learns the existence of a group known as The Patriots who are controlling the United States with their agent Revolver Ocelot being one of the main antagonists. Additionally, there are several games that follow Big Boss' past where he establishes FOXHOUND and the Patriots, as well as several spin-off titles.

But Lord, remember me and mine
    Wi’ mercies temporal and divine!

And a’ the glory shall be thine!
    Amen! Amen!
