YB Senator Dato Sri Effendi Norwawi (Malaysian, aged 63) is presently a Senator in the Upper House of Parliament since 2006. He is currently Executive Chairman of Encorp Berhad, the company he founded and is listed on the main board of the KLSE. Encorp main activities are property development and construction. Encorp Bhd recently emerged winner of the inaugural The Edge-PEPS Value Creation Excellence Awards 2010(commercial category) for its development ‘Encorp Strand’ in Kota Damansara.
He holds a Bachelors of Arts (Hons) majoring in Development Administration from the University of Tasmania. He was also conferred an Honorary Degree of the Doctor of Law from the same university. He was made Adjunct Professor under the Faculty of Business at the University of Tasmania in November 2008.
He was Federal Minister in Agriculture (1999–2004) during which time he initiated the modernization and commercialization of agriculture. His last post in Cabinet was Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Economic Planning Unit (EPU). During his tenure,to accelerate the implementation of high impact national projects,he initiated the National Implementation Task Force (NITF), the National Implementation Directorate (NID) and National Economic Action Council (NEAC). He was also principally involved in coordinating the master planning of the five (5) corridor developments in the country. He was appointed as Joint-Chairman with Minister Mah Bow Tan of Singapore for the Malaysia – Singapore Coordination Committee to facilitate the development of the Johor Corridor, Iskandar Regional Development Authority. He retired from politics in 2008.
Previous to that he was Executive Chairman of Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC), which he led for 15 years (1981–1995). During his time the SEDC won the Chief Secretary to the Government's Quality Award and the prestigious Malaysian Prime Minister's Quality Award.He was the Chairman of Bank Utama (now part of the RHB Banking Group) between 1990 and 1995 during which time he led its turnaround into one of the major banks in Malaysia then. He founded ntv7, the private free-to-air TV channel that he has since divested.
Dato Sri is an active sportsman who loves tennis, golf and aikido. He enjoys movies, music and singing and is a guitar enthusiast. He is married to Datin Sri Tiara Jacquelina, Malaysia’s renowned Film and Stage musical Producer and actress.
