MLS Cup '98, the third edition of Major League Soccer's championship match, was played between defending champion D.C. United and the Chicago Fire to decide the champion of the 1998 season. The game was played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA on October 25, 1998. Chicago beat D.C. United 2-0, bringing an end to United's reign as two-time defending MLS champions. The Fire's Peter Nowak was named MVP, assisting on both goals. Chicago's first goal was in the 29th minute, after a give-and-go between Nowak and Ante Razov. The move lured United goalkeeper Tom Presthus out of the goal, at which point Nowak slipped the ball to Jerzy Podbrozny for an easy tap-in at the opposite post. The second goal was scored by Diego Gutierrez when he deflected the ball off a Nowak shot. Chris Armas is often given much credit for this championship, because of his constant dogging of noted D.C. player Marco Etcheverry. Zach Thornton saved 8 D.C. shots on goal, including 3 from Roy Lassiter. This win also gave Chicago the historic honor of capturing both the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup titles in the same year, the team's inaugural season.

Famous quotes containing the word cup:
“There is not enough exercise in this way of life. I try to make up by active gymnastics before I dress when I get up, by walking rapidly in the lower hall and the greenhouse after each meal for perhaps five to ten minutes, and a good hand rubbing before going to bed. I eat moderately; drink one cup of coffee at breakfast and one cup of tea at lunch and no other stimulant. My health is now, and usually, excellent.”
