Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association

Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association is a political organization that helped sponsor Proposition 13 in California in 1978.

It was founded by California Republican Howard Jarvis. The organization has outlived its founder, and continues to operate to the present day under the same name, opposing all new and old taxes on Californians. The organization is currently headed by Jon Coupal, whose salary in 2009 was $255,000, and who is "almost always aligned with Chamber of Commerce and real estate interests, and often with tobacco, oil, gambling and other big businesses."

It presently supports Proposition 23 (which aims to suspend AB 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006). It was the plaintiff in a lawsuit to change the ballot wording of Proposition 23.

Famous quotes containing the words association and/or howard:

In this great association we know no North, no South, no East, no West. This has been our pride for all these years. We have no political party. We never have inquired what anybody’s religion is. All we ever have asked is simply, “Do you believe in perfect equality for women?” This is the one article in our creed.
    Susan B. Anthony (1820–1906)

The judiciary has fallen to a very low state in this country. I think your part of the country has suffered especially. The federal judges of the South are a disgrace to any country, and I’ll be damned if I put any man on the bench of whose character and ability there is the least doubt.
    —William Howard Taft (1857–1930)
