In 2004, the airport served 225,636 passengers (+4.7% vs. '03). Bloemfontein airport, like many others in South Africa, underwent R46 million in construction and upgrading of the whole airport in preparation for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
In November 2012, the South African government announced that the airport's name was to be changed to Bram Fischer International Airport, with the official renaming to occur before the end of 2012.
