Rebecca (given Name)

Rebecca or Rebekah is a feminine given name originating from the Hebrew רִבְקָה (Rivkah). The meaning may be something like "captivating" and is possibly of Aramaic origin, although this is contested. W.F. Albright held that it meant "soil", or "earth", and was the name of an earth-goddess. Commonly, the name is believed to mean "to tie," "to bind," or "snare."

The name's most famous bearer was the wife of Isaac and the mother of Jacob and Esau in the Hebrew Bible.
