List Of Current National Basketball Association Head Coaches
The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a major professional basketball league in North America. The league was founded in 1946 as the Basketball Association of America (BAA). The league adopted its current name at the start of the 1949–1950 season when it merged with the National Basketball League (NBL). The league consists of 30 teams, of which 29 are located in the United States and one in Canada. In the NBA, a head coach is the highest ranking coach of a coaching staff. Head coaches typically hold a more public profile and are paid more than the assistant coaches. Currently there are 30 head coaches who are serving for the 30 NBA teams. The list includes the date of hiring and the performance record of each coach.
Gregg Popovich has served as the San Antonio Spurs head coach for more than 15 seasons, longer than any other current head coach. Popovich has also coached the most games (1,246), won the most games (847), and lost the most games (399) among active coaches with their current team. None of the other active coaches has served more than eight seasons for his current team. Denver Nuggets head coach George Karl is the most experienced head coach. He has been the head coach of five different teams during his 24-season head coaching career. He has coached the most games (1,805), won the most games (1,074) and lost the most games (731) among active coaches in their entire coaching careers. None of the active head coaches have been inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach.
All active coaches are American. Twelve coaches have spent their entire head coaching careers with their current teams: Scott Brooks with the Oklahoma City Thunder, Larry Drew with the Atlanta Hawks, Mike Dunlap with the Charlotte Bobcats, Lionel Hollins with the Memphis Grizzlies, Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs, Erik Spoelstra with the Miami Heat, Tom Thibodeau with the Chicago Bulls, Monty Williams with the New Orleans Hornets, Frank Vogel with the Indiana Pacers, Tyrone Corbin with the Utah Jazz, Jacque Vaughn with the Orlando Magic, and Mark Jackson with the Golden State Warriors.
At the start of the 2012–13 season, three teams began the season with new head coaches. The three new head coaches are Mike Dunlap (Charlotte Bobcats), Jacque Vaughn (Orlando Magic) and Terry Stotts (Portland Trail Blazers).
On November 9, the Los Angeles Lakers fired Mike Brown and after Bernie Bickerstaff served as an interim head coach for three games, hired Mike D'Antoni on November 11.

Famous quotes containing the words list of, head, coaches, association, list, current, national and/or basketball:
“Do your children view themselves as successes or failures? Are they being encouraged to be inquisitive or passive? Are they afraid to challenge authority and to question assumptions? Do they feel comfortable adapting to change? Are they easily discouraged if they cannot arrive at a solution to a problem? The answers to those questions will give you a better appraisal of their education than any list of courses, grades, or test scores.”
—Lawrence Kutner (20th century)
“Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;”
—Clement Clarke Moore (17791863)
“The real persuaders are our appetites, our fears and above all our vanity. The skillful propagandist stirs and coaches these internal persuaders.”
—Eric Hoffer (19021983)
“They that have grown old in a single state are generally found to be morose, fretful and captious; tenacious of their own practices and maxims; soon offended by contradiction or negligence; and impatient of any association but with those that will watch their nod, and submit themselves to unlimited authority.”
—Samuel Johnson (17091784)
“Loves boat has been shattered against the life of everyday. You and I are quits, and its useless to draw up a list of mutual hurts, sorrows, and pains.”
—Vladimir Mayakovsky (18931930)
“Through this broad street, restless ever,
Ebbs and flows a human tide,
Wave on wave a living river;
Wealth and fashion side by side;
Toiler, idler, slave and master, in the same quick current glide.”
—John Greenleaf Whittier (18071892)
“In my public statements I have earnestly urged that there rested upon government many responsibilities which affect the moral and spiritual welfare of our people. The participation of women in elections has produced a keener realization of the importance of these questions and has contributed to higher national ideals. Moreover, it is through them that our national ideals are ingrained in our children.”
—Herbert Hoover (18741964)
“Perhaps basketball and poetry have just a few things in common, but the most important is the possibility of transcendence. The opposite is labor. In writing, every writer knows when he or she is laboring to achieve an effect. You want to get from here to there, but find yourself willing it, forcing it. The equivalent in basketball is aiming your shot, a kind of strained and usually ineffective purposefulness. What you want is to be in some kind of flow, each next moment a discovery.”
—Stephen Dunn (b. 1939)
