Duke Blue Devils Basketball
The Duke Blue Devils men's basketball team is the college basketball program representing Duke University in the Atlantic Coast Conference of NCAA Division I. The team has the fourth-highest number of all-time wins of any NCAA men's basketball program and is presently coached by Mike Krzyzewski.
Duke has won four NCAA championships (fifth all-time) and appeared in 10 Championship Games (third all-time) and 15 Final Fours (tied for third all-time), and has an NCAA-best .750 NCAA tournament winning percentage. 11 Duke players have been named the National Player of the Year, and 71 players have been selected in the NBA Draft. In the 2008–2009 NBA season, Duke had more former players on NBA rosters than any other school. Additionally, Duke has 36 players named All-Americans (chosen 60 times) and 14 Academic All-Americans. Duke has been the Atlantic Coast Conference Champions a record 19 times. The program also lays claim to 19 ACC regular season titles. Prior to joining the ACC, Duke won the Southern Conference championships five times. Duke has also finished the season ranked No. 1 in the AP poll seven times and is second, behind only UCLA, in total weeks ranked as the number one team in the nation by the AP with 121 weeks. Additionally, the Blue Devils have the second longest streak in the AP Top 25 in history with 200 consecutive appearances from 1996 to 2007, trailing only UCLA's 221 consecutive polls from 1966–1980. As a result of such success, ESPN, in 2008, named Duke the most prestigious college basketball program since the 1985-86 season, noting that "by any measure of success, Duke is king of the hill in college basketball in the 64-team era of the NCAA tournament." Since that designation, Duke won another National Title in 2010.
Famous quotes containing the words basketball, devils, duke and/or blue:
“Perhaps basketball and poetry have just a few things in common, but the most important is the possibility of transcendence. The opposite is labor. In writing, every writer knows when he or she is laboring to achieve an effect. You want to get from here to there, but find yourself willing it, forcing it. The equivalent in basketball is aiming your shot, a kind of strained and usually ineffective purposefulness. What you want is to be in some kind of flow, each next moment a discovery.”
—Stephen Dunn (b. 1939)
“Divinity of hell!
When devils will the blackest sins put on,
They do suggest at first with heavenly shows,
As I do now.”
—William Shakespeare (15641616)
“Autumn in New York, why does it seem so inviting?”
—Vernon Duke (19031969)
“This side of the truth,
You may not see, my son,
King of your blue eyes
In the blinding country of youth,
That all is undone,
Under the unminding skies....”
—Dylan Thomas (19141953)
