Saul Milton (Chase) and Will Kennard (The Status) originally met whilst university students in Manchester. Milton studied History of Art at the Victoria University of Manchester, while Kennard studied English and Humanities at Manchester Metropolitan University. Both decided to drop out of university to pursue a music career.
They released some material on various labels dealing with drum and bass music, including Renegade Hardware, most notably the tracks "Barbarians" and a remix of "20/20" by Future Cut. They released an EP called Ten Tonne EP, and collaborated with other artists.
