Carrier Strike Group Nine

Carrier Strike Group Nine, abbreviated CSG-9 or CARSTRKGRU 9, is a U.S. Navy carrier strike group. It is currently assigned to the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Carrier strike groups are employed in a variety of roles, all of which involve gaining and maintaining sea control as well as projecting power ashore.

The aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) is the group's current flagship, and as of 2012, other group units include Carrier Air Wing Two, the guided-missile cruiser USS Cape St. George (CG-71), and Destroyer Squadron 9: USS Sterett (DDG-104), USS Halsey (DDG-97), USS Momsen (DDG-92), USS Shoup (DDG-86), USS Ingraham (FFG-61), USS Rodney M. Davis (FFG-60), and USS Ford (FFG-54).

Carrier Strike Group Nine was the first strike group to deploy with an entire light anti-submarine helicopter squadron embarked, with individual air detachments operating from escort ships and supported by the carrier. This was significant because previously such squadrons had only operated off the escorts. The group's 2007 Composite Unit Training Exercise pre-deployment training exercise included Mobile Security Squadron 2, and Helicopter Visit, Board, Search and Seizure Team 1, which was a first for the Pacific Fleet. Carrier Strike Group received the Humanitarian Service Medal in recognition of its humanitarian assistance/disaster response efforts in Indonesia during Operation Unified Assistance.

Famous quotes containing the words group, carrier and/or strike:

Just as a person who is always asserting that he is too good-natured is the very one from whom to expect, on some occasion, the coldest and most unconcerned cruelty, so when any group sees itself as the bearer of civilization this very belief will betray it into behaving barbarously at the first opportunity.
    Simone Weil (1910–1943)

It is the corpse of the bourgeoisie that separates us. With us, it is that class that is the carrier of the chromosome of banality.
    Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)

And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my fingers upon thee!
