Home Economics

Taking up most of the first floor, home economics has two open plan kitchen-classrooms which can accommodate 24 pupils each. The department expects pupils to bring their own ingredients but provides a wide range of cooking equipment to enable the making of sweet and savoury dishes. A strong emphasis is put into the teaching of the nutritional values of food. Every year the department bakes Pudsy cakes for selling to raise money for BBC Children In Need. There is a rule that pupils may not walk right through the Home Economics corridor and can only enter and exit one way, despite there being doors at both ends of the corridor.

Famous quotes containing the words economics and/or home:

There is no such thing as a free lunch.
    —Anonymous.

An axiom from economics popular in the 1960s, the words have no known source, though have been dated to the 1840s, when they were used in saloons where snacks were offered to customers. Ascribed to an Italian immigrant outside Grand Central Station, New York, in Alistair Cooke’s America (epilogue, 1973)

You can’t appreciate home till you’ve left it, money till it’s spent, your wife till she’s joined a woman’s club, nor Old Glory till you see it hanging on a broomstick on the shanty of a consul in a foreign town.
    O. Henry [William Sydney Porter] (1862–1910)
