Auckland railway electrification has been proposed for several decades, and work began in the late 2000s. After investment in new infrastructure and improved services created massive patronage gains on Auckland's diesel commuter network in the middle 2000s, the long-discussed electrification project was finally funded (though still with a few false starts) from a combination of regional (Auckland Regional Council, later Auckland Council) and Crown (national) budgets.
The contract for the electrification infrastructure was awarded on 14 January 2010 to an Australian and New Zealand consortium, while the contract for 57 trains was awarded on 6 October 2011 to a Spanish manufacturer CAF.

Famous quotes containing the word railway:
“Her personality had an architectonic quality; I think of her when I see some of the great London railway termini, especially St. Pancras, with its soot and turrets, and she overshadowed her own daughters, whom she did not understandmy mother, who liked things to be nice; my dotty aunt. But my mother had not the strength to put even some physical distance between them, let alone keep the old monster at emotional arms length.”
—Angela Carter (19401992)
