Polyphonic Ringtones

Mobile music is music, which is downloaded to cell phones and played by cell phones. Although many cell phones play music as ringtones, true polyphonic ringtones are music which does not contain artists voices or instrumental performances. Usually cell phone ringtones are encoded using the MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) or similar encoding formats, many of which have been developed for mechanical music delivery. The cell phone music market initially started with monophonic ringtones. Monophonic ringtones were the earliest form of ringtones, and played one tone at a time.

Polyphonic ringtones are ringtones that make use of polyphony. Many cell phones make use of such ringtones as they offer customers more options in customization. Polyphonic ringtones are much more sophisticated than regular monophonic ringtones. With increasing market and technology development the number of voices was steadily increased. This was improved upon with polyphonic ringtones, which played several tones at the same time so a more convincing melody could be created. For sure, polyphonic ringtones are better than monophonic ringtones.

We will sing of great crowds excited by work, by pleasure, and by riot; we will sing of the multicolored, polyphonic tides of revolution in the modern capitals; we will sing of the vibrant nightly fervour of arsenals and shipyards blazing with violent electric moons; greedy railway stations that devour smoke-plumed serpents; factories hung on clouds by the crooked lines of their smoke; bridges that stride the rivers like giant gymnasts, flashing in the sun with a glitter of knives; adventurous steamers that sniff the horizons; deep-chested locomotives whose wheels paw the tracks like the hooves of enormous steel horses bridled by tubing; and the sleek flight of planes whose propellers chatter in the wind like banners and seem to cheer like an enthusiastic crowd.
—Tommaso Marinetti (1876–1944)

However, they still sound more like an old video game than real music. Polyphonic ringtones are the successor of monophonic ringtones but the immediate predecessor to true tone ringtones. This is in contrast to MP3 ringtones, for example, which will play digitally sampled recordings. True tones are the most popular form of ringtones. They capture 3/4 of the US ringtone market in the second quarter of 2006, followed by monophonic ringtones and polyphonic ringtones and ringback tones. But monophonic and polyphonic ringtones are falling in popularity while ringback tones are growing.

Monophonic and polyphonic ringtones only require the payment of the publishing royalty. Some polyphonic ringtones are downloadable for free. You can customize your cell phone with so many different kind of ringtones: 80's polyphonic ringtones, advertising polyphonic ringtones, latin polyphonic ringtones, video games polyphonic ringtones, musical polyphonic ringtones, cartoon / manga polyphonic ringtones, classical polyphonic ringtones, dance polyphonic ringtones, country polyphonic ringtones, seasonal / festive polyphonic ringtones, hip-hop / rap polyphonic ringtones, jazz polyphonic ringtones, national anthems polyphonic ringtones, oldies polyphonic ringtones, pop polyphonic ringtones, remix / drum n bass polyphonic ringtones, rnb / soul polyphonic ringtones, rock / metal polyphonic ringtones, sound / special effect polyphonic ringtones, sports polyphonic ringtones, religious polyphonic ringtones, electronica / techno polyphonic ringtones, themes (movies, tv) polyphonic ringtones and other miscellaneous polyphonic ringtones.
